Terence Tan, Director
Terence is dedicated to achieving expedient and beneficial outcomes on behalf of his clients. His areas of focus are in dispute resolution and cross examination. He has been lead counsel in matters including fraud, trusts, misrepresentation, breaches of agreements, and unjust enrichment.
Terence was called to the Bar of England and Wales as a barrister (Inner Temple) in 1994. He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1997. Terence commenced his career in two of the largest law firms in Singapore, and has successfully argued matters on behalf of his clients at all jurisdictional levels, including the Court of Appeal.
Terence has also previously held senior level positions in the real estate, hotel and hospitality industries. Terence first cut his teeth first as an entrepreneur, establishing award winning bars and restaurants in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. He latterly held senior positions in a listed real estate and hotel company, and also a multinational hotel group, before transitioning back to practice in 2012.
Significant reported decisions that Terence has been in include the following:
UDL Marine (Singapore) Pte Ltd v Jurong Town Corporation and Economic Development Board of Singapore – This matter involved allegations of misrepresentation in relation to the renewal of a lease. Terence was instructed as lead counsel to argue the matter on behalf of the appellant before the Court of Appeal.
Ng Koon Yee Mickey v Mah Sau Cheong – This matter was successfully resolved in favour of his client before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. This matter involved, amonst others, the “Prevention Principle”, the implied contractual duty to co-operate, and the standard for implying contractual terms in law.
Jasvinder Singh Sethi and anor v Sandeep Singh Bhatia and anor – Areas of law traversed in this matter included misrepresentations and breach of contract. Terence was lead counsel for the principal defendant, and the matter was successfully resolved in his client’s favour in the High Court. An appeal against that decision was withdrawn.
Attorney-General and anor v Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council. Terence acted for the town council, at first instance in the High Court, in successfully resisting the imposition of a declaration and the appointment of independent accountants in this matter.
Public Prosecutor v Azlin Binte Arjunah and anor – Terence was appointed as counsel under the Legal Assistance Scheme for Capital Offences, and was part of a team which successfully resisted the imposition of the death penalty which the prosecution had argued ought to be meted out in the circumstances.
